Kuching! Kachang!

Yesterday, departing Bangkok, we used Singapore as a layover, spending a night at Siamy's before leaving for East Malaysia early this morning. The island of Borneo is a tropical paradise shared by 3 nations: Malaysia (east, as distinct from peninsular), Brunei, and Indonesia.

We arrived in Kuching, the capital of the state of Sarawak, in East Malaysia, to be graciously met by Valentine, CEO of the Damai Puri Resort and Spa. Kuching's climate is tropical rain forest and the city is clean, relaxed, and laid back compared to KL.

Valentine dropped us off in town to explore for several hours...

Kuching means cat in Malay...
please ignore Golden Arches in the background...
Who in their right mind would eat there???????????

Mrs. Mundain, a cougar among the kitty kats,
just ask Franklin...a lyin' lion in his days of glory...
but, sadly, now just an old tomcat...

Kuching style ice Kachang...hence the title of this post

Rojak...deep fried tofu, bananas, pineapples & cucumbers
served hot, with a sweet, tangy sauce

our fabulous host Valentine...a victim of my snapshot ineptitude
...really, Valentine deserves much better than this...apologies

a local Kuching market by the riverfront...

different grades of sun dried chillies fetch different prices

assorted dried fish

many species of dried anchovies

sun dried salted fish

halal free range chickens

many, many dry goods and textiles vendors...

friendly fish mongers...

proudly displaying fresh eel...

...and pirhanna

check out the nasty teeth...

multiple banana species offered at a fruit stand

Huge chillies...

the mundane Mundains, across the river
from the Sarawak Parliament buildings

Mundain artsy shot for afficionados of fine photography...
note the Komoda Dragon about to consume the Parliament...
while a boat drifts slowly downstream...
there's deep meaning in this composition...

...please feel free to give your interpretation
so that I may respond to your comment in the same manner as
Marshall McLuhan in the Woody Allen classic, "Annie Hall"

one more for the artsman...
Mundainly titled "Perpective of Modernization"

last one, I promise...please submit...
on my behalf to National Geographic

Would a self-respecting gourmand admit to his gourmet
friends to dining under the double arches...in Borneo?

If you won't tell, neither will we...
